Amsterdam is rapidly becoming Europe’s “startup place to be” with help from public private organisation StartupAmsterdam. Throughout our capital city, disruptive ideas are encouraged, nurtured, and then scaled into real international businesses.
Amsterdam has a proven track-record as Europe’s best test-bed. For startups, it’s the place to validate and tweak your business model. It’s so easy to “leave the building” and connect with those important launching customers. Amsterdam offers the perfect combination of creativity, openness and entrepreneurial spirit. Europe’s best-known accelerators Rockstart and Startupbootcamp were founded here, with hundreds of teams having graduated from their famous programs. Amsterdam is also home to ID&T’s Open House, probably the world’s only dance event accelerator! On the other side of the river Ij, facing central station, the magestic building of A-Labs is being transformed. They’ve created a hub in Amsterdam North where multidisciplinary creatives within the fields of new media and technology find their peers, start new ventures and house their company. Creative startups should check out THNK, a unique creative leadership program.
Amsterdam recently celebrated with its first unicorn, FinTech company Adyen. They combined rapid growth with a billion dollar valuation – exponential growth on a scale that’s just awesome. A closely guarded secret is the huge talent pool of high-class engineers. No wonder Uber, Optimizely, Atlassian, Palo Alto Networks, Sungevity and AVG, decided to set up a shop here. And with over 100,000 students enrolled at the three universities, the city’s pool of eager talent is unlimited. Amsterdam Science Park represents the largest concentration of research-institutes in the country. The University's top entrepreneurs work in their science and technology accelerator, Ace Venture Lab.
Amsterdam is tightly connected to the region. Only 20 kilometres from Amsterdam, accelerator and incubator Haarlemvalley has the ambition to become the place where startups can get their startupmoney. Haarlemvalley also has a public-private cooperation with the Gemeente Haarlem under the name StartupHaarlem to promote the startup ecosystem.
But also to the rest of the world. Schiphol airport boasts direct connections to over 320 international destinations. Going global from a home base in Amsterdam has never been easier.
