Why stARTup Exhibition?

In4Art incubates young talents that pursue an artistic career. They are amidst defining their tone of voice and way of expressing. Some refer to them as emerging artist. If we look at business practice, we refer to this stage as startup companies.

“ a startup is an organization formed to search for a repeatable and scalable business model “
(Steve Blank)

Although on an individual basis, artists are searching for the right fit between their aspirations and realization.
– An aspiration that provides depth and research opportunities to develop new series with an own signature.
– A realization that gives access to viewers, believers, future collectors or so to say consumers.

Here we have: an artistic interpretation of the repeatable and scalable aspects from the startup definition.

There are a lot of parallels in terms of adaptation growth curves, testing, pivoting and proving you are worth it. A startup uses a pitch or launch event to reach its audience (clients, investors or partners). The same counts for artist. They too need to get launched to collectors, galleries and art institutions. It is a long and bumpy road, with a deep valley of death, before one is an established and respected party.

Startups can turn in their early phase to an incubator, In4Art offers artist this incubation opportunity to show their abilities during the stARTup Exhibition.

Co-Existence

As counts for any driver for innovation, a fierce commitment to research and vision is needed. As In4Art we believe that artists have the capacity to bring the unexpected, the mind-boggling, the new and fresh concepts. In their practice they fuse technology with art and make art influenced by technological drivers.

How do we relate to robots? What impact will artificial intelligence have? To what extend is the internet of things a real enabler of progress? As humans we are in a constant search of balance. Balance between technology and nature. Balance between realities and emotional states. Balance between personal growth, business career and societal impact.

This is our point of entry. How do artists address our Co-Era, in which so much is present and we pursue a Co-Existence of all.

“Co-Existence is the state or fact of living or existing at the same time or in the same place”

Two stARTup Artists

Co-Existence as theme enables a remarkable coexistence of two profoundly different artistic talents. We invited Beatriz Chamussy and Tiwánee van der Horst to reflect on our fast changing society. We asked them to Co-Exist during the exhibition. They agreed to experiment, to experience and explore the multi-layered Co-Existence.

Our artist in residence is Beatriz Chamussy. For the past 9 months she has been working on new work for the Co-Existence exhibition. Her works absorb us into a wired and connected world. The paintings are all intertwined and connected. They make the audience pose, interact and compete for attention.

She started as an illustrator and for this exhibition experiments with having drawings and paintings co-exist. Furthermore, she uses different techniques, like digital transformation and carbon sketching, to create her images. She paints stories, objects and places that depict a playful and puzzled world. To understand the paintings, you should zoom into the details. However, the details do not stand alone, by themselves they wouldn’t survive, they co-exist by being part of a complex connected structure.

The visiting artists is Tiwánee van der Horst. In her practice, she is driven by creating a post internet environment. She wants to get away from the screen. At the same time, she is fascinated by 3D objects. Therefore, she aims to stretch the bounds of the possible by creating an analogue machine that enables 3D painting. During this exhibition she will test her third prototype. Plastic is used as paint, the machine is transformed into an extension of the human body. This gives physical and mental space to make visions in an intuitive way.  In collaboration with Beatriz, she will realize new objects in the timespan of the exhibition.
